Senior Healthcare: Medical Aspects
By David G. Petten

The problems associated with caring for an elderly loved one can be overwhelming. Often times, families aren’t sure where to turn, and even more importantly how to pay for the available help. While there are several insurance plans with varying degrees of coverage, some very good and others certainly acceptable, they are often quite expensive to manage. That, coupled with the poor deductibles, can make it almost impossible for seniors to get the care they need and deserve.

The key to finding a good insurance plan is to explore all the possibilities, and figure out how they match up to the needs of the loved one in your care. Other families, however, are fortunate enough to be able to afford god healthcare, as they often utilize the savings of their patient. Still, there is often o no way to anticipate the potential cost that will inevitably continue to rise on a daily basis.

Another medical concern is the quality of care the patient receives. Since the idea of home care is to provide seniors with necessary medical care while helping to improve the overall quality of life, it is important this is done at home or at the very least in the home of a family member who can assist. Home care can involve many services, the most common of which are home nurses, dispensing of medication, and consultation with the client’s physicians and other medical professionals.

There are several factors that play a part in the ever increasing home care situations. Two of these factors are a new shift in healthcare toward the reduction of hospital stays and an aging population. Since hospital costs have become inflated and good and affordable insurance coverage harder to come by, many people are choosing to care for their loved ones right at home. This often means dong much of the work themselves, which can be difficult if the elder is ill or if various family members are unable to take time away from their jobs in order to properly care for the individual. This means calling someone in to assist, especially during the day.

The first step in receiving home care should be consulting with a physician to learn the loved one’s medical needs, and to determine just how independent he or she should be. It is also a good idea to check with the insurance company to make sure the individual qualifies for home care, since there are often specific circumstances that must be met depending on the company and level of coverage.

Once this is established, and it has been determined that home care is appropriate, consult with various home care facilities to choose the one that is best for your loved one. You will then meet with trained professionals to discuss the next steps to take and the services that will be provided. Remember, better care can mean a longer life.

Physical And Psychological Changes During Senior Years
By Joe Goertz

There are many stages of life and living, but one series of changes has a more significant impact on people than any other, especially on women.

It can be difficult to describe the specific symptoms of the change as they vary between individuals; however the types of effects that the change brings about are common. As you would expect the effects of change are also quite different for males and females.

Unfortunately for women there are a number of symptoms to deal with. In most instances they occur at the same time multiplying the impacts of the symptoms. Typically women first notice the change with the onset of hot flushes. In addition there can be night sweats. In tandem these symptoms make it difficult for a woman to go about her daily life without adjusting her normal activities to compensate.

Imagine feeling cold then inextricably feeling hot when everyone else seems to be just comfortable. Some of the other symptoms that can be physically experienced include chills and cold sweats, feeling dizzy (also called vertigo), feeling faint and/or feeling weak. As well, some women experience differences in urinary tract habits. It is not unusual, for example, to feel a little discharge of urine when a woman sneezes, coughs, exercises, or even when she is having intercourse.

If these symptoms are not enough for a woman to realize that the change is upon her, there are more obvious signs that she is about to move into the next stage of life. It is the irregularity and ultimately vanished menstrual cycle. For many women this is the most emotionally challenging symptom because it forces them to face the reality that reproduction is out of the question.

While women undoubtedly suffer during this phase, they are by no means the only ones to experience change. Men are also subject to physical and psychological symptoms. With men the changes relate to reductions in testosterone levels. Some of the symptoms that may be experienced include blood rushes to the face and hot flushes. The most daunting symptom facing men is the diminished libido because it can seem to challenge their feelings of masculinity. In addition they may also experience erectile dysfunction (commonly referred as ED).

While experiencing the change of life may not be what people, both male and female, look forward to in their senior years, it is an inevitable process that everyone must go through. In actual fact putting a name to the symptoms that can be experienced can be in a way liberating. Sharing changes, both emotional such as mood swings and irritability along with the physical such as weakness helps make going the changes somewhat easier.

Adopt Right Posture To Avoid Back Pains Of Senior Years
By Peter Conati

Can you remember your parents telling you to stand straight, and not to slouch? All parents have told this to their kids some time – but most kids hardly listen. Many even feel harassed by their parents because they want them to stand in a certain way,
and not the way they feel comfortable themselves.

But the truth is that what parents tell us has been learnt from their own experiences. Right posture is not about appearance but it is to minimize the sufferings of back pain. Right posture helps back muscle to get stronger and neck to be held up better.

If you hold yourself wrong then these muscles must work harder to keep every thing in the right place. And this causes strain in the muscles, which causes back pain.

Do an experiment. Go find a full-length mirror. Stand sideways in front of it in the posture you would naturally stand as if there as no mirror. Imagine a line at the back of your body touching your ear lobe, shoulders, hip, knees and your ankle. Is
it straight? If not then you are not standing straight. Your natural posture is causing your muscles to hold themselves at the wrong angle. This is one of the most frequent reasons why people suffer from chronic back pain.

More than 80 per cent of our time is spent in either sitting or sleeping. Imagine if were to be using the posture which strain our muscles during all this time. We want to make sure that we do that right, not just how we stand. Most people sleep 7-8
hours on average – some more, and some less. Make sure that you sleep on a mattress that keeps your back as straight as possible. A soft mattress is unlikely to give firm support to your back. If you already have a soft mattress then the best
option is a half an inch thick plywood board under your mattress. If you can afford one than go buy a new firm mattress.

If your job requires sitting for most part of the day, or you drive long distances either going to work or as part of your job than you should pay particular attention to how you sit. Your sitting posture should be straight. Many people use a pillow or
a towel to help them sit straight or for extra support. Every hour take a 30 second stretch break. This will make sure that any tension in muscles is straightened. You may already be using specially designed chairs at work but you should still take
stretch break.

So from now on, make sure that your posture is straight. When you grow old and see others suffering from back pain, you will thank you self for taking the corrective action while young. – because you will not suffer from aches and pains that are often
associated with bad posture. And it is so easy to correct, especially when you know how easy it is, and how high the stakes are.

Senior Care For Alzheimer’s

Senior Care For Alzheimer’s
By Alex Jensen

As a person ages, a certain amount of memory loss and confusion is quite normal. Personally, I’ve been known to invoke the cliché, “The older I get, the better I was!” Unfortunately,
Alzheimer’s disease represents a more serious loss of mental sharpness and calls for special care for seniors.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive form of pre-senile dementia. Symptoms are typically first noted in a person’s late forties or early fifties. As the disease takes effect, it will first impact memory. Impaired thought and speech will follow with the patient eventually becoming helpless.
Alzheimer’s is a truly horrible disease because it robs a person of their ability to function. The disease is also damaging to family and friends as it is very difficult to watch a parent, brother, sister or friend progress to the point where they don’t recognize anyone. The burden of caring for a person suffering from Alzheimer’s is significant. At some point in time, a family will have to look for assistance with the care.

Most “board and care” and “assisted living facilities” are willing and capable of providing for a person suffering from Alzheimer’s. These facilities are similar to nursing homes, but with less of an institutional atmosphere. If, however, a senior becomes increasingly disoriented, perhaps even occasionally wandering away, they may require a facility with a dementia waiver.

Despite the name, a “dementia waiver” is an indication that a facility and staff have additional training and licensing for the care of patients with dementia. On top of the additional training, the actual facility may be secured with a perimeter to keep patients on the grounds.

Alzheimer’s disease leaves a mark on family and friends as well as the victim. There are, however, facility options that can at least take the care burden off of you.

About the Author: Alex Jensen is with http://www.careplacement.com/ - a free placement service for Southern California. Care Placement's staff can review your care requirements to determine whether skilled nursing care, assisted living facilities or board and care homes are a viable option for seniors.

Senior Fitness

Senior Fitness
By Kirsten Hawkins

Staying fit and mobile plays a large role in senior health. It’s not always easy to maintain fitness levels as we age. Naturally, our bodies change, but we don’t want them becoming immobile! Here are some tips to make your senior years more enjoyable and fit.

As much as possible, continue doing your daily living tasks. Taking a bath, even if it’s just a sponge bath, gives your arms a mini-workout. You’re bending and keeping flexible, which is vital for proper joint health.

Cooking involves peeling vegetables, some walking, bending to reach pots and pans. Don’t fret that you may not be able to do all grocery shopping by yourself. As long as you can continue cooking at home, this allows more chance for movement.

So, we’re continuing our daily tasks, and now it’s time to consider some specific exercise.

Golfing provides fun, a chance for walking, bending, and maintaining flexibility. Even miniature golf allows for some of these tasks, so join the grandkids if you can.

Perhaps getting out to a golf course isn’t possible for you right now. Buy one of those mini-putting greens you can use indoors. Even these will improve your ability to move more freely.

Several times a day, make it a point to stop and work on a flexibility exercise. For instance, stretch your legs while sitting in the recliner. Do five or six mini leg lifts or stretch your arms over your head and hold them there for a count of ten. All activity, even simple ones, increases your ability to move freely and with less pain.

Check with your doctor about the exercises he or she suggests. You may be asked to visit a physical therapist who will work with you on improving your fitness. Therapists have some fun ideas on staying fitter – simple games you can play in your home with your grandkids, like batting a balloon back and forth with a plastic racket. You’ll find yourself enjoying the exercise even more with your children around!

By making a simple choice each day of staying mobile as much as possible, you increase your chances of living a more independent life.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Usually Diagnosed In People 40 Years Old Or In The Senior Years
By Connie Limon

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) develops slowly over many years sometimes before you notice symptoms such as “feeling short of breath.” Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of COPD. It can also be caused by breathing in lung irritants like pollutions, dust, or chemicals over a long period of time.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is usually diagnosed in people 40 years old or older, and is a major cause of death and illness throughout the world. In the U.S.A., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the 4th leading cause of death. There is no cure for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is not a
contagious disease. Damage to airways and lungs cannot be reversed. There are only things you can do to feel better and slow the damage to your lungs.

In a healthy person airways of the lungs are clear and open andthe air sacs are small, elastic, and springy. In people diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the airways and air sacs lose their shape and become floppy.

Causes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease include:

•Cigarette smoking (most common cause)
•Breathing fumes and other pollutants that irritate and damage the lungs and airways.
•Pipe, cigar and other types of tobacco smoking can cause COPD especially if the smoke is inhaled.
•People with a family history of COPD are more likely to get the disease if they smoke.
•Secondhand smoke plays a role in causing COPD.
•Frequent, severe lung infections in childhood may increase the risk for acquiring COPD later in life.

Symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease start years before the flow of air in and out of the lungs is reduced and include:

•Cough with sputum production (most common is a cough that does not go away and coughing up lots of sputum).
•Shortness of breath especially with exercise.
•Wheezing or whistling sound when you breathe.
•Tightness in the chest.

It is important to note that not everyone who has a cough and sputum goes on to develop chronic pulmonary obstructive disease.

A doctor looking for chronic pulmonary obstructive disease will examine you, listen to your lungs and ask you questions about your medical history. Physician questions will include what kind of lung irritants you may have been around for long periods of.time and if you smoke.

A breathing test called “spirometry” may be used. It is painless and used to show how well your lungs work. Based upon this the spirometry test results, your doctor can determine if you have chronic pulmonary obstructive disease and just how.severe it is. There are four levels of chronic pulmonary obstructive disease severity, they are:

•People at risk for COPD
•People with mild COPD
•People with moderate COPD
•People with severe COPD

Goals of treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease include:

•To relieve symptoms with no or minimal side effects from the treatments
•To slow progress of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
•To prevent complications from the disease
•To improve overall health

The exact treatment plan for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can be different for each person and is based on whether symptoms are mild, moderate or severe.

Treatments used for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease include:

•Medications such as bronchodilators that work by relaxing the muscles around the airways to open them up and make it easier to breathe. Bronchodilators are inhaled directly into the lungs via an inhaler
•Pulmonary or lung rehabilitation
•Oxygen treatment
•Surgery
•Treatments to manage complications or sudden onset of symptoms

•Pneumococcal vaccine may be recommended to prevent pneumonia
•Annual flu shot to avoid breathing complications from the flu

Surgery is usually done for patients with severe symptoms that do not improve from other types of treatments, and have a hard time breathing most of the time. The two types of surgery that are considered in cases of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease are:

•A bullectomy to remove a large air sac that may compress a good lung
•A lung transplant

Hospitalization may be needed if:

•You have a lot of difficulty catching your breath
•You have a hard time talking
•Your lips or fingernails turn blue or gray

the passing of time. A number of studies have shown that massage
therapy can have a direct impact in managing the effects of
aging. It has also shown promise in bringing comfort to those
suffering from arthritis and other physical ailments.

As people age, they naturally become less active. This lack of
physical activity can lead to the onset of other conditions
which, if not dealt with, can greatly reduce their quality of
life. The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage
and Bodywork (NCBTMB) has been promoting the use of massage
therapy for some time now. According to a recent study, there is
a general awareness of massage therapy but a lack of
understanding of its direct benefits.

In the case of senior citizens, there are a number of benefits
that be derived from therapeutic massage. According to the Touch
Research Institute, it is extremely useful in the treatment of
Alzheimer's patients, as it can facilitate relaxation and
communication. In the case of arthritis sufferers, it can
greatly assist in pain management and help increase range of
motion. It also triggers natural joint lubrication, which is
extremely important for those suffering from arthritis.

Massage therapy has also shown promise by helping to increase
strength and muscle coordination. It can also greatly improve
one's posture by reducing muscle tension, which has the added
benefit of assisting seniors with a higher quality of rest.

levels, along with their mental awareness. Study after study has
shown that there is a place for massage therapy within the
health care community.

More and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of
massage therapy. In an age where the common approach to pain
management has been dominated by the interests of the

What Do You Need To Know About Senior’s Health

What Do You Need To Know About Senior’s Health
By Mansi Aggarwal

As one progresses in age, he retreats in health or fitness. Though senior citizens are counseled to stay fit, it is barely the case like. Numerous natural transformations occur in the body as it moves towards fragility. For instance, the bones and muscles lose their potential reducing the stamina of the body, the kidneys and other internal organs start malfunctioning and the vigor of the skin recedes.

But the fact is that health is wealth at every stage of life. It is more crucial when one enters into the senior citizens category because there are few caretakers in those times. So, the elderly should concentrate on fitness as much as possible.
There are quite a few ways in which the aged can enjoy a good physical and mental health.

1. Health Insurance- it is the first and foremost requirement of every senior citizen. A medical insurance is the greatest friend in the time of need. It can provide you and your family the financial aid in worst times of your life.

But one should be pretty careful in purchasing a health care policy. The plan that facilitates maximum benefits should be taken up.

2. Diet and Exercise- the diet of individual varies with the age along with other factors. But at an older age, a person should be extra careful in matters of eating. This is because, the antibodies or the immunity system receives a setback in this
age and one becomes more prone to all sorts of illnesses. The diet therefore should be thriving in vitamins, minerals, proteins and carbohydrates. Fats should be strictly avoided as they make one susceptible to numerous diseases particularly
heart problems. There must be an extra intake of calcium to support the diluting bones.

But a rich diet is not enough. Some exercises should be a part of daily routine in this age. Individuals need to be extra cautious about movements of their limbs for the natural strength and the disease fighting ability of the body keeps on retiring
in older ages.

3. Those who have a family history of ailments like prostrate and colon cancer, the diseases that most likely hit men in fifties and above, should get regular medical check ups done. They must follow the doctor’s advice and all the injunctions and
prohibitions.

4. Women are more likely to be affected by breast cancer. They also are vulnerable to other diseases due to menopause. Though the course of destiny can never be averted yet prevention should never be ignored. There are some medicines that women should take after menopause in order to minimize the risk factor.

5. Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia are even threatening for women. The former is a fall in certain cognitive brain functions. It is a type of dementia. Dementia impedes an individual’s intellectual functioning and capability to work. These diseases mostly affect women in sixties and above that. Such women gradually become forgetful and incompetent in doing skilful work. As soon as some of these symptoms are evident, doctor should be consulted without delay. Drugs at early stage might stop the situation from worsening.

6. Avoid stress. Stress is as harmful as any other contagious disease. Don’t stoop to drugs so called stress busters. Consult a psychiatrist if conditions run out of control.

Resolving Age Spots: Procedures That Can Work For You

Resolving Age Spots: Procedures That Can Work For You
By Matty Mathias

People often times say that there are two things in life that are certain: death and taxes. The fact is that there are three things in life that are certain for the vast majority of men and women: death, taxes and age spots. Through this article you are presented with a primer to assist you in understanding what treatments and procedures are available to you today to assist you in resolving troublesome age spots.

It is important to note at the outset that there are some over the counter applications, creams and products that have proven to be somewhat effective at improving the appearance of age spots for some people. Generally speaking, these products are designed to fade age spots. With that said, these products really cannot be said to resolve an age spot condition. Again, these applications work only to reduce the appearance of age spots – and, normally, that reduction in the appearance of age spots normally is only transitory or temporary.

Many people think that they save money through the purchase and use of some sort of over the counter product designed to combat age spots. While this initial cost of such a product may be a bit less than a professional treatment or procedure, the fact is that you will have to continually purchase such a product over time. In the end, you easily can spend far more on over the counter products in the long run and never achieve the type of result that you can obtain through professional treatments and procedures.

Specialists in the field of treating and resolving age spots can offer to you a wide range of different treatments and procedures. This includes the use of prescriptions that come in the form of creams. In many instances, creams and similar types of products are effective in resolving a milder age spot situation.

As has been the case in other areas of skin care and treatment in the past decade, there have been significant advances when it comes to resolution of age spots in the 21st century. For example, specialists are now applying the latest in laser technology for the care and treatment – for the complete resolution – of unattractive age spots.

In trying to decide what treatment option or procedure provided by a professional makes the most sense for you, you will want to spend some time online researching what is available to you today. Fortunately, there are sites in operation today that can provide you with comprehensive information about the care and treatment of age spots. In addition, these useful sites also maintain directories through which you can find a skincare professional who can assist you with appropriate treatments and procedures to deal with your age spots.

How To Reduce The Appearance Of Age Spots

How To Reduce The Appearance Of Age Spots
By Brian Fong

Age spots are mainly caused by long-term sun exposure. Although sun is the number one reason for developing age spots, smoking, a poor diet, poor liver function, and a diet rich in oxidized oils are also contributing factors.

These age spots are a result of the overproduction of lipofuscin, a dark substance produced by our cells. Age spots usually begin appearing when we are in our 30’s and, besides being unsightly, increase our risk of skin cancer. As is the case with most skin conditions, age spots are easier to prevent than to treat. Eating a diet rich in green leafy vegetables, carrots, yams, and other foods that are high in carotene will help reduce your chances of getting age spots in the first place. If you are already are suffering from age spots, don‘t loose hope. There are options available to you to reduce the appearance of age spots, as well as improve the overall health of your skin.

There are several products on the market today that will help in diminishing the look of age spots. Fade creams are a popular choice among consumers. These over-the-counter creams contain moisturizers with a two percent hydroquinone content which is a bleaching agent that will aid in the fading process. Best results are obtained with the cream is used in conjunction with glycolic acid moisturizer. Prescription creams that contain vitamin A, such as Retin-A or Retinova, work more effectively
than the over-the-counter fade creams.

There are more invasive options available to you for those suffering from a more serious case of age spots. Chemical peels are one of these options. Using 30%-70% glycolic acid, the fading factor is much more pronounced than in either of the
creams mentioned above. The treatment is simple and can be done in a short session, even on your lunch break if need be. You will need more than one treatment to reach the full effects of the procedure.

Laser resurfacing is another option similar to the chemical peel. In this procedure, the age spots are literally burned off the skin’s surface with a laser and can be accomplished in one treatment. It does, however, have a recovery time of about one
week and can be quite expensive.

For a more natural and cost-effective way to help prevent age spots simply limit your exposure to the sun and, when you are in the sun, wear sunscreen. Limit your alcohol intake and eat a well balance diet.

Horseradish, Lemon Reduce Age Spots

Horseradish, Lemon Reduce Age Spots
By Sharon Bell

Years of sun exposure and free radical damage can lead to flat brown spots on your hands, face, and body. While age spots are harmless, most people consider them an unwelcome sign of aging.

"Age spots are really sun-induced freckles," said Robert E. Clark, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Dermatologic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology Unit at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. “They commonly appear on the backs of
the hands.”

You can also see them along the shoulders (where someone has had significant sun exposure) and on the face. Age spots are common in older people but someone who's had significant sun exposure can get them in their late twenties, thirties and
forties.

Even a little bit of sun worshipping can cause age spots later in life. Sunlight contains ultraviolet rays that cause suntans and burns. As time goes by, tanning causes more pigment to be deposited in the skin. This eventually leads to flat, brown skin lesions known as age spots. They're also called liver spots or sun spots.

The good news: age spots are harmless. They're benign and they don’t become skin cancer or premalignant skin lesions. But because some skin cancers such as melanoma can look like age spots, you should ask your doctor to examine your skin during
your annual checkup.

However, age spots won’t vanish. Fortunately, you can make them less noticeable with a little help from horseradish and vinegar.
Mix together one teaspoon of grated horseradish root, 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon vinegar, and 3 drops of rosemary essential oil .This mixture will exfoliate the top layer of your skin. Dab it onto your age spots with a cotton
swab once or twice a day. Stop once your spots have lightened noticeably.

If your age spots aren't too dark or large, over-the-counter skin-bleaching creams containing hydroquinone can help. One good product is Lumnaderm that lightens skin and eliminates unsightly age spots, blemishes and hyperpigmentation.

You can also ward off age spots by wearing sunscreen and taking a multivitamin that contains free radical fighting antioxidants like vitamins C and E.

Dealing With Age Spots In Your Skin

Dealing With Age Spots In Your Skin
By Garrett Lynn

Dark blemishes that commonly appear on the back of the hands, forearms, neck, chest and face are known as age spots. These arise from excessive exposure from the sun, hereditary causes, or bad care for your skin. They can also be described as sun
spots, liver spots, lentigos or lentigines. These generally appear as flat, tan, brown or dark brown spots. If you or anyone you know has a spot that have this description, see a physician immediately to determine if they might be cancerous and if there is an effective treatment available to decrease and diminish the
appearance of the spots.

It is sometimes difficult to understand what may cause age spots from appearing on your skin. As you get older, your skin tone and youthfulness decreases, allowing for blemishes to increasingly appear in unwanted places, generally those of which
have been exposed to the sun for a prolonged amount of time. Age spots are much more common in those who have freckles and burn easily. It is very crucial for you to know if you have had enough sun, to develop spots, and to constantly use sunscreen to
thwart the condition from ever occurring on your skin.

Age spots generally vary in size, from a small pea to a dime, and are very flat in nature. Since they appear after prolonged sun exposure, the areas include; the shoulders, face, forearms, upper back and the back of hands. If you notice any sort of blemish, dark in nature that has the shape and look of an age or sun spot, it is important to seek immediate care. Although they do not call for any sort of cancer, having them are a sign of the type of skin that would be able to become cancerous.

Many people do not even realize any blemish on their skin that might easily be recognizable as cancerous. Our daily lives can be so busy that caring for your skin often is thought of secondhand.

It is very crucial to always be aware of the symptoms and signs, although minor, that can lead to something much more serious.

In order to best treat age spots, prevention is the method to go by. Avoiding the sun altogether is recommended or at least using sunscreen whenever you are outside. As an example, you will never find age spots in places of your body that are not
exposed to the sun. For most of those who are older, it is much too late to prevent age spots from appearing on your skin.

Thankfully there are several effective and safe treatment options available that will improve the appearance and allow you to feel comfortable in your own skin. That is something that we all want and need to feel secure and healthy.

Some treatments available are bleaching creams, chemical peels and laser resurfacing. Please consult with your physician before administering any of these procedures. Every person is different with different skin, some of which may respond ineffectively to these treatments.
